Yes, yes. I’m a massive Lord of the Rings fan. Have been ever since my mum read my sister and I the entire trilogy one summer, complete with funny voices. So that’s the title sourced, and it’s up there because I went away for the weekend to Warwick Castle on a Guide camping trip.
First things first, it was a beautiful trip. The castle is absolutely gorgeous, the views from the top of the tower are stunning and we were incredibly lucky and had sunshine the entire time (very unusual for a Guiding trip!). On the downside, I had an absolutely miserable night. I brought big fluffy pyjamas, but still woke up unable to feel my nose or anything below my knees. I probably had about 4 hours sleep total, just because it was too cold! I ended up snuggled deep inside my sleeping bag, breathing condensation and I just HATE that.
Warwick Castle is lovely, but I ended up feeling like it was just a pretty backdrop for all the things going on inside it. There was a falconry show, which felt a bit short; the Warwick warriors who were excellent and funny; a scary dungeon tour; Merlin’s Tower; an archery display; a trebuchet show… The list goes on. It would be a fantastic family day out, but because of my responsibilities I didn’t get to enjoy it the way I do with castles normally. I like to wander around all the gardens and the towers, I don’t like to be rushed and timed for doing things. http://www.warwick-castle.com/ is the site – maybe it felt a bit too organised for me because it’s one of the attractions in the Merlin Pass group.
In all, it’s a great place for a day or two for exploration, and probably best for families. I managed to get in a bit of reading on the coach back home too! Whenever I go away somewhere, I take one of my mini classics from this range http://www.waterstones.com/waterstonesweb/products/bram+stoker/jonty+claypole/dracula/3526099/, Dracula being the one I had with me. I love the fact that these books are properly pocket sized!
Do you have a thing about anything mini? I love mini books, mini pliers, mini spoons… I may have a problem! Have you been to Warwick Castle? What did you think about it? As always, feel free to email me about anything 🙂
